Three Lakes Clarity Monitoring

Purpose: To monitor water clarity in lakes & reservoirs connected to Colorado-Big Thompson Project.

Sites & Scope: Currently there are fourteen sites in Grand Lake, three in Shadow Mountain Reservoir and one reference site at Columbine Lake. The reference site serves to measure clarity at a natural body of water not connected to the Colorado Big-Thompson project.

Sampling Type & Frequency:

Clarity measurements are taken using Secchi Disks. To better understand measurements, we also collect weather data, water surface temperature, water color, and visual observations on algal conditions and recreation potential. From May to October, data is collected at least once a week.

Sampling Entity(ies): GCWIN manages the sampling and uses both field technicians and volunteers to collect data.

Sampling Protocol: GCWIN follows a training and QA/QC process for all field techs and volunteers to ensure the accuracy of the Secchi depth readings.
