Stream Temperature Monitoring  StreamTemp

Purpose: To monitor stream temperature for Grand County's Tier I and Tier II cold-water streams*.

Sites & Scope: From nineteen sites monitored in 2004, GCWIN's program has expanded to thirty-one temperature sites in 2010. Since 2009, air temperature has also been monitored at three sampling sites.

Sampling Type & Frequency: Stream and air temperature is collected at 15 minute intervals from May to October.

Sampling Entity(ies): GCWIN is responsible for monitoring the 31 sites throughout the county. Additionally, The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) monitors stream temperature at five locations around Kremmling since 2007 and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District (Northern Water) monitors stream temperature at ten locations in streams linked to the Colorado-Big Thompson Project.

Sampling Protocol: GCWIN & BLM temperature data is collected continuously with the Onset UTBI-001 TidbiT v2 logger. Northern Water uses the U22-001 Water Temp Pro v2 loggers.

Cost: Approximate program cost for GCWIN in 2010 was about $6,200 and $5,800 in 2011.

Funding Partners: In 2014: Trout Unlimited, Winter Park Water & Sanitation District, Grand County Water and Sanitation District #1, Winter Park Ranch, Winter Park Resort, Granby Sanitation District, Fraser Sanitation District, Denver Water, Town of Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling Sanitation, and the Colorado River Water Conservation District.

Data: All temp data is archived on the WILbur database.

The data has been used by the Colorado Department Public Health and the Environment to determine impairment and place sites on the 303(d) list, and by Grand County for the Stream Management Plan. Denver Water and Northern Water have also used the data to develop mitigation proposals for the Windy Gap and Moffat Firming Projects.
