High School Bug Week

Bug Week is an annual program including the entirety of the 10th grade Middle Park High School biology students for a stream monitoring and assessment project. Nearly 100 students participate in a week-long seminar taught by environmental professionals that includes in-class instruction on stream ecology, biological monitoring, and benthic-macroinvertebrate life.

Students take this knowledge to the field as they work in teams alongside environmental specialists to sample for benthic macroinvetebrates, conduct water chemistry tests, and a range of other habitat assessment activities. These field procedures are conducted at a variety of GCWIN's  Monitoring Program sites within the Fraser River and Colorado River watershed. Students use the data they collect to put together reports on the health of sections of the watershed at their sampling sites.
