Healthy Headwaters Monitoring

healthy_headwatersPurpose: To develop a baseline dataset to assess aquatic life health in the Fraser and Colorado Rivers.

Sites & Scope: Started in 2010, eight sites monitored: four along the Fraser River, and four along the Colorado from Windy Gap Reservoir to just above the CR 39 bridge.

Sampling Type & Frequency:

Six sampling events occurred between July & October. Sampling included:

  • In-situ monitoring of: pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, temperature and specific conductivity.
  • Grab samples were analyzed for: nutrients, dissolved and total metals, total and dissolved organic carbon, chlorophyll-a, and anions.
  • Benthic Macroinvertebrates were collected and analyzed during the September event

Sampling Entity(ies): GCWIN performed all sampling. The Region VIII U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (E.P.A.) Laboratory performed in-kind analyses for the grab samples. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) arranged for the in-kind lab analyses of Benthic Macroinvertebrates.

Sampling Protocol: In-situ monitoring was collected by In-Situ Aqua Troll 9500 data sondes device. Grab samples were taken and analyzed according to E.P.A. protocol . Benthic Macroinvertebrate sampling were performed according to CDPHE protocol.

Funding Partners: CDPHE, Region VIII E.P.A. Laboratory

Data: We are currently working on the data and hope to have it uploaded to the WILbur database soon. Please check back for more updates on its availability.
